Summer Abroad Programs Policies & Disclosures
The information below applies to all of Pacific McGeorge's summer abroad programs: Inter-American, Salzburg, and Uganda.
Admissions and Enrollment
All of Pacific McGeorge's summer programs are open to students and graduates of ABA-approved or state-accredited law schools and fully-accredited foreign law schools. Students must have completed at least one year of full- or part-time study at one of these approved or accredited law schools.
Law students from schools other than Pacific McGeorge must submit a letter of good standing from their home institution in order to enroll in any Pacific McGeorge Summer Program.
Law School Credit Information
Each of Pacific McGeorge's summer programs has been approved by the American Bar Association.
Students enrolled in law schools other than Pacific McGeorge should check with their appropriate school official regarding procedures to follow for transfer of credit earned from participation in either classroom courses or externships toward fulfilling degree requirements. Acceptance of any credit or grade for any course taken in the program, is subject to determination by the student's home law school.
Participation in a foreign summer program may not meet requirements to accelerate graduation. Students should consult their home institutions for advice about residency requirements under relevant ABA standards if they seek to accelerate their graduation.
Disclosures — Program Changes, Cancellations, and Refunds
Class schedules, lecturers, and topics covered (i.e., the "syllabus") may be adjusted based on availability of lecturers or facilities. Visits to legal institutions or other tours and events may be altered based on the availability of facilities, guides, or lecturers, etc. Students will be provided with as much notice as possible and appropriate substitution will be provided. Adjustments will not substantially affect the content of the program, and do not constitute a "substantial modification" of the program.
Cancellations or Modifications
Unforeseen events beyond our control may require substantial modification or cancellation of a program. If the Program is cancelled, students will be immediately notified by email, and will be given the opportunity to enroll in another Pacific McGeorge summer abroad program, or to enroll, if possible, in another ABA approved summer abroad program. Among the reasons a program may be cancelled or modified are the following:
- Area of Instability. If the U.S. State Department Consular Information Sheet for the country in which the program is conducted indicates that it is an "area of instability," students will be promptly notified, and the program will be cancelled or modified. Even if the country has not been officially deemed an "area of instability," Pacific McGeorge School of Law may cancel or substantially modify a program where it deems the risk of harm to be at an unacceptable level.
- Travel Warning. If, prior to the commencement of a program or during the course of a program, a serious U.S. State Department Travel Warning is issued for the country in which the program will be conducted, students will be promptly notified of the warning and be given an opportunity to withdraw from the program.
- War, civil unrest, terror threats, epidemics, or health hazards which pose unacceptable risks of harm to participants.
- Unforeseen events, such as fires, extreme weather, or natural disasters, which render the classrooms or other site facilities including student housing unavailable or unsuitable for use.
- Labor unrest or strikes which make transportation to the site or the use of essential facilities at the site impossible, unduly difficult or hazardous.
- Incapacity or unavailability of key or necessary faculty or personnel, for which no substitute can be arranged in a timely manner.
- Low enrollment. Programs that have fewer than the minimum required number of admitted students as of April 1, 2013 are subject to cancellation. The School of Law will promptly notify admitted students of any cancellation or substantial modification and the reasons therefore.
If the program is cancelled for the reasons as set out above, students will receive a full refund of all payments made within 20 days, except for the room and board payments utilized prior to the date of cancellation.
For withdrawal made prior to May 1, students will receive a refund of all monies advanced except for the deposit.
For withdrawal made after May 1 but prior to the first date of the respective program, students will only be refunded tuition. All other fees will be forfeited.
For withdrawal during the course of the program, all fees including tuition are forfeited.
Grading will comport with Pacific McGeorge's grading practices. Students attending from other law schools should seek guidance from their home institution as to whether course units will credited and how grades will be reported on their official transcripts.
Class Attendance, Preparation, Participation & Performance
Regular and punctual class attendance is mandatory and required by the American Bar Association. The faculty expects that you will be fully prepared and that you will actively participate in class. The faculty is required to take class attendance, preparation, participation, and performance into consideration in grading. Your attendance and active involvement in class discussion form a central part of the learning process in law school for you and your classmates. Failure to meet the minimum standards set by your professors may result in a lower grade, or exclusion from taking the final examination, resulting in a failing grade.
Pacific McGeorge students receiving financial aid to cover summer abroad program tuition will have their student accounts debited once financial aid is disbursed. Important — If you expect to have funds from your financial aid office deposited to your bank account after you arrive in the program country, be sure to bring enough money to cover your expenses for several days. Program staff cannot cash personal checks that are drawn on a U.S. bank. Pacific McGeorge students should discuss availability of Financial Aid with the school's Financial Aid Office.
Students from other law schools should contact the financial aid office of their home institution.
Accommodations for Disabilities
Every effort is made to accommodate persons with physical, medical and/or learning disabilities; however, Pacific McGeorge cannot ensure that the housing and classroom facilities used in the summer programs abroad will meet the same standards for accessibility as do the facilities of the school's campus in Sacramento.
The U.S. Department of State lists current travel advisories, if any, for each of the summer abroad program countries.
A passport is a document issued by your government allowing you to travel abroad. A visa is a permit issued by the government you are planning to visit allowing you to enter that country. Passports and visas are the responsibility of the student.
United States citizens can obtain a passport application from the nearest U.S. Department of State Passport Office or from certain State and Federal courts and post offices. If you lose your passport while abroad, contact the nearest U.S. embassy immediately.
To avoid any delay in obtaining your visa or passport, be sure to apply as early as possible.
Medical & Travel Insurance
Medical and travel insurance is required to participate in any of Pacific McGeorge's summer abroad programs. If you are a student at Pacific McGeorge and have student medical plan, you are covered while abroad, including travel assistance with evacuation benefits that meet most Visa requirements. Students who have other private medical or travel insurance should check their insurance plans to ascertain if the plan extends while away abroad.
If your plan does not cover illness or emergencies while traveling outside of your country, you are strongly encouraged to purchase temporary medical insurance for non-emergency and emergency medical expenses, including coverage for emergency air transportation, which is usually quite costly.
Students who enroll in one of Pacific McGeorge's summer abroad programs will be required to provide a proof of medical insurance. We will retain these materials only for the duration of the program.
