Gi Nam

Tax Counsel, California Franchise Tax Board
Area of Practice: Tax Law
Year Graduated: 2016

Undergraduate: UCLA
Major: Political Science

At McGeorge, Gi Nam '16 discovered his passion for tax law. Fresh out of law school, he currently works as a Tax Counsel at California Franchise Tax Board.

Through McGeorge's tax and business law concentration programs, Mr. Nam was able to closely study tax law. He was also connected to an externship where he researched and analyzed legal issues related to sales tax law at the California State Board of Equalization. "I find tax law to be rewarding because it is a unique and niche field of law that affects everyone and everything." In fact, Mr. Nam aspires to become a state and local tax law expert.

Through his work, Mr. Nam frequently runs into McGeorge alumni. "In almost every firm and state agency that I've worked for, I've always run into a McGeorge alum already working there. Each time I meet an alum, we get to bond over our law school memories and talk about our former professors and classes."

Mr. Nam originally decided to study law at McGeorge because of its proximity to the state capitol. "I am glad that I decided to go to McGeorge because it allowed me to gain work experience in various state agencies and it made financial sense because cost of living was more affordable  than in other parts of California."

While attending McGeorge, Mr. Nam had his hands full. He worked full-time as a legislative aid for the California State Assembly, and then served as a law clerk at Timothy M. Cary & Associates and at the California Department of Human Resources.   Nevertheless, he maintained a laser focus on how his choices as a student would impact his career.

His advice to future and current students is select a field of law that you are passionate about. "After you decide on your specialization, you will have an easier time planning for your career because you will know what to research, what courses to take and what type of work experience you need to land your dream job."
