Joan Miles is the director of grants and program development for the Montana Healthcare Association. She is responsible for the administration, coordination and supervision of the grant funded programs housed in the Montana Health Research and Education Foundation. She also serves as a liaison between MHA members and state, federal and other agencies on grant-related matters.
Prior to joining MHA, Miles was the director of the Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services from 2005 through 2008. She also served 12 years as the Lewis & Clark County health officer and director of the Lewis & Clark City-County Health Department. Earlier in her career, she worked as a law clerk for the Montana Supreme Court and served two terms in the Montana Legislature as a representative of central Helena.
Miles served as past chair of the Tobacco and Chronic Disease Advisory Committee for the National Association of City and County Health Officials and served on several policy committees of the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials. She currently is a faculty member for Montana’s annual Summer Public Health Institute, where she teaches classes in public health law and policy. In 2003, Miles received distinguished service awards from both the Montana Public Health Association and the Montana Environmental Health Association.
