Full Profile

From his time studying international affairs at the Lebanese American University in Lebanon, to his service in the Finnish military, to his daily work as a partner at a Sacramento law firm, Kalle Mikkola, '13 credits much of his career success with his skills in connecting with different cultures. His law firm, Acquest Law, specializes in immigration and naturalization, family law, civil litigation, criminal law, business law, and estate planning and the firm has the ability to interact with clients in English, Finnish, Spanish, Punjabi, Hindi, and Urdu. "My dad was in the UN and I was born in Jerusalem, Israel. I've always been drawn to international relations. While my current work is in family law, I use the skills I developed in my international relations work to relate to different aspects of the human condition each day as I work toward the best interests of my clients."

Mikkola holds an undergraduate degree in international relations from Towson University (2005). In between his undergraduate degree and JD, Mikkola studied international relations at the graduate level in Lebanon at the Lebanese American University. A native to Finland, he also served in the Finnish military.

When Mikkola applied to law school, he was already residing in Sacramento and favored McGeorge for its opportunities to focus on international relations and its location. "I cast a broad net and was accepted to several schools back east as well as McGeorge. McGeorge was my first choice both because of its strength in international programs and the fact that I would not have to move again to attend school there. After a childhood of moving around, I was craving a home base and I found it in Sacramento."

While Mikkola thought he wanted to go on from law school to work for an international policy think tank, his desire to keep roots in Sacramento called again and he worked in policy at a local organization. Around this time, despite initially not wanting to practice traditional law, a classmate from McGeorge asked Mikkola to partner with him when he started Acquest Law. Mikkola took the leap. "I crave intellectual stimulation. In my current role, I have opportunities to both solve problems for clients and grow my firm each day. It turns out that I love it."

Mikkola often represents his clients in court, and without a mentor above him, he credits McGeorge for taking on that role. "McGeorge offered so many opportunities through internships and externships to be prepared for courtroom situations and other real world lawyering scenarios. I'll never forget how prepared I felt the first time I went to court because of my externship experience at McGeorge."

To students beginning law school, Mikkola emphasizes the importance of having fun, a practice Mikkola also took to heart, "I immersed myself in many intellectually challenging and unique opportunities outside the classroom at McGeorge. Every memory from McGeorge is a good memory."

Mikkola's future goals are to keep building his current practice while he continues to use his diplomacy skills to communicate with and advocate for his clients.
