ABA Honors 1977 Graduate

August 28, 2009

Dinah Bear,’77, received the 2009 ABA Award for Distinguished Achievement in Environmental Law and Policy on August 2 at the ABA’s 2009 Annual Meeting in Chicago.

Bear served as general counsel for the President’s Council on Environmental Quality for more than two decades, under administrations of both parties. The CEQ, part of the Executive Office of the President, coordinates federal environmental efforts, working closely with agencies and other White House Offices in the development of environmental policies and initiatives.

The ABA award is only the latest recognition of Bear’s remarkable career deftly navigating the political streams of Washington, D.C., while remaining true to the country’s environmental goals. Among her other honors, she received a 2000 Muskie-Chafee Ward, granted to federal employees for “making significant contributions to protecting the nation’s environmental, public lands, and natural resources.”

“Dinah’s fairness, substantive knowledge and fidelity to the letter of our country’s path-breaking statute, the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969, enabled her to work highly effectively with a broad array of constituencies,” says Pacific McGeorge professor Steve McCaffrey. “She is most deserving of the ABA award.”
