U.S. Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales discussed the U.S. Department of Justice’s efforts to prevent terrorism on March 2 at Pacific McGeorge.

Gonzales spoke on the Bush administration’s positions on domestic wiretapping, treatment of prisoners, and other controversial tactics for a half-hour, then took written questions from an audience of 300 students, faculty, local judges and attorneys. “I’m grateful to this law school for doing so much in the field of national security law,” said Gonzales. “The vitality of the debate going on in our country on national security concerns versus individual civil liberties is a sign of the maturity of our nation. I appreciate the opportunity to have that discussion with you here today.” Several faculty members, law students and local peace activists staged a protest demonstration prior to Gonzales’ remarks.
