Günter Herzig, an official at the European Court of Justice in Luxemburg and law professor at the University of Salzburg, delivered the second lecture in Pacific McGeorge's International Jurist Series on Sept. 4, 2012.

Herzig, who spent two weeks on campus as a visiting professor, spoke on "Crisis and Democracy: Europe's Constitutional Response to the Financial and Economic Crisis." He contends that the euro area crisis is a complex blend of financial, economic, political and institutional problems. Herzig maintains that despite a multi-faceted reaction to these problems, power has shifted away from the European Commission as the traditional guardian of key treaties.

The author of several treatises and articles on European Union law, Herzig teaches Economic Law, Labour Law and European Law at Salzburg. He is also the director of the University's master program in European Union Studies. In his judicial role, he oversees Danish, French and Greek cases at the Registry of the Court of First Instance.

Sylvie Cimamonti, a professor of law at the University of Aix-Marseille in France, will deliver the next lecture in the jurist series on Nov., 5, 2012. All lectures are free and open to the public.
