The National Jurist recognized McGeorge School of Law among 20 top law schools for excellence in public service careers in the government category in its Winter edition of PreLaw magazine, along with Notre Dame Law School, Washington University and American University. McGeorge was ranked No. 3 in Government Law with an A grade in two of the three graded criteria in the magazine.

The magazine study recognizes the best 49 schools in the nation in three categories — public interest, government and prosecutors/public defenders. It is based on curricular offerings, employment placement, debt, starting salary and LRAP programs, with 20 schools in each category.

Prelaw also recently recognized McGeorge's Legislative and Public Policy Clinic among the top 15 most innovative clinics in the Winter 2015 edition, along with Georgetown University Law Center's Social Enterprise & Nonprofit Law Clinic and Washington and Lee University School of Law's Black Lung Legal Clinic. Students have celebrated successes during the first two years of the Clinic. One of the Legislative and Public Policy Clinic student projects in 2015 contributed to Gov. Jerry Brown signing the controversial AB-15 "End of Life Act" into law in October 2015. The previous year, four of the five bills drafted by students during the McGeorge Legislative and Public Policy Clinic's first year were signed into law by Gov. Brown.

The success of McGeorge alumni in government careers stems from the law school's deep roots in state and federal government and the work of the Capital Center for Law & Policy. McGeorge offers a distinctive Capital Lawyering concentration for J.D. students with exclusive access to externships, mentors, engagement and networking activities, and targeted professional development to launch their career in areas such as government or policy law. A network of alumni leaders at all levels of government in California provide McGeorge Capital Lawyering students with guidance and opportunities as students develop the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in many types of government and public lawyering careers.
