Profile

Niki Cunningham pursued a Juris Doctor degree at McGeorge because of the school's reputation and its proximity to her home in Fresno. "Before I went to McGeorge, I had heard a lot of great things about the school. Once I toured the campus, I fell in love with the close-knit atmosphere that McGeorge provided.  McGeorge felt homey in a way that a lot of other law schools attached to sprawling undergraduate universities did not."

With an undergraduate degree in criminology from Fresno State, Cunningham thought that her ultimate area of practice would be in criminal law.  But, the hands-on experience that McGeorge provides to its students exposed her to a field that she discovered she enjoyed practicing more - civil litigation. "The hands on experience that McGeorge provides gives you a taste of many different areas of the law so that before you even graduate you can start directing your career toward the field that best fits your interests and skills."

Niki reflects on how the courses that she took at McGeorge directly translated to her career and helped her succeed professionally. The two years of required writing courses at McGeorge enabled her to competently start drafting motions as a summer associate at McCormick Barstow.

Impressed by her savvy, the Fresno based firm hired her and gave her litigation experience from the start. Niki thanks McGeorge for preparing her to represent her clients in court. "The trial advocacy program gave me the oral advocacy skills to hit the ground running and confidently go right into court after passing the bar."

Niki focuses her practice on business litigation, estate and trust litigation, and general tort litigation. She loves the culture of her firm and is thankful for the opportunity that McCormick Barstow has provided her to develop her career as an attorney.

However, more than rush and exhilaration that she gets from fast-paced litigation, Niki savors the opportunity to serve her clients. "I really enjoy the challenges of law, but what I enjoy most about my profession is building relationships with my clients and helping them through challenging and stressful points in their lives. It is so rewarding to be able to settle cases for my clients before they go to trial and help them avoid the heartache and expense of trial."

In addition to working as a partner at McCormick Barstow, Niki is an adjunct professor at the San Joaquin College of Law. She is grateful for her decision to attend McGeorge. "McGeorge is an all-around great school. If I had the opportunity to do my law school experience over again, I would do it exactly the same."
