Paul D. Paton is Professor of Law and Director of the Ethics Across the Professions Initiative at the University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law in Sacramento, California. He had a distinguished career in private practice, corporate counsel and public service settings for a decade before joining the academy full-time in 2004. Educated at the University of Toronto and the University of Cambridge, he holds master’s and doctoral degrees from Stanford Law School. Professor Paton’s research focuses on ethics in corporate contexts, legal ethics and lawyer regulation in comparative perspective, and on corporate governance matters. Twice named a Fellow of the U.S. National Institute on Teaching Ethics and Professionalism, he has been recognized nationally in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom for his contributions to debates on the future of the legal profession, and is a frequent speaker to academic and professional audiences and a media commentator on these issues. He was appointed for five years to the Canadian Bar Association’s National Ethics and Professional Responsibility Committee, serving two years as its Chair, and was Reporter to the American Bar Association’s Ethics 20/20 Commission between 2010 and 2012 with responsibility for its work on Alternative Business Structures. He has also held a number of university administrative posts, including service in 2012-13 as the University’s inaugural Vice Provost.
