Sonia Zaheer

Hometown: Sacramento, California
Undergraduate: Sacramento State University
Major: Kinesiology/Psychology

The birth of one's first child is a time of reevaluation for many people, and for Sonia Zaheer, it was the event that made her decide law school was the right path for her.

Sonia, born and raised in Pakistan, worked for almost five years as a financial advisor after finishing her undergraduate degree, and she thought increasingly about pursuing a law degree as she worked in that field. "After the birth of my first son, I decided that I should pursue what I really wanted to do, which was to study law."

Sonia chose McGeorge because it fit her life. "I picked McGeorge because the school offered a part-time program, with flexibility in schedule," she says. "That was key for me because when I started law school, my kids were really young-ages two and four."

At McGeorge, Sonia says that she has been lucky to take classes with truly great faculty. "McGeorge has excellent professors, who deeply care about their students and want to see their students succeed," she says.

Sonia says that her work with the McGeorge Global Business & Development Law Journal (the "Globe") as a Staff Writer and Chief Articles Editor has been especially useful. "The skills I learned enabled me to do a good job this summer as an extern with the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of the U.S. Trustee, where I appeared in U.S. Bankruptcy Court, Eastern District of California, on UST's behalf and drafted pleadings, memoranda of points and authorities, and research memoranda."

Now that graduation is in sight for Sonia, she is looking forward to putting her degree to use. "I can't wait to graduate, so much so that I almost can't think past it," she says. "When I do step out into the real world, I am looking forward to an exciting career in a litigation/trial work-related position."

Sonia's sons are also excited for her graduation. "Since they can remember, my kids have seen me being busy with school, and I think that's a good thing," she says. "But they are looking forward to my graduation so that I can fulfill my promise to them: a trip to Disney World!"
