Participant, Inter-American Summer Program in Guatemala
Hometown: Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.
Undergraduate: University of Wisconsin — La Crosse
Major: International Business, Management & Technology, Spanish
In the spring semester of 2012 I participated in McGeorge's student exchange program in at the Universidad Francisco de Vitoria in Madrid, Spain. I attended the classes Corporate Law I, Arbitration, Intellectual Property, Computer/Internet Law, Stock Market/Financial Markets, and European Union Law.
Directly after my experience in Spain I traveled to Montevideo, Uruguay and completed an internship with the law firm Hughes & Hughes Abogados. Hughes & Hughes is a private law firm that focuses on M&A and corporate law. Throughout my internship I was engaged in document translation and review, legal research, and drafting of memoranda in the fields of corporate law, project finance, M&A, trusts, tax law, and unfair competition in advertising.
My experience in the Inter-American program was very valuable at a personal level and for my professional development as a transnational lawyer in an increasingly global economy. First and foremost, it opened my eyes to a different culture and life in a developing nation and this helped me mature both personally and professionally. Furthermore, the program provided me with the opportunity to improve my Spanish language skills. These skills opened doors for me via my subsequent academic and professional experiences in Spain and Uruguay. Last but certainly not least, the program exposed me to principles of international law, foreign laws, and treaties while allowing me to see how they relate and are applied in a practical setting.
